Bottled water ban widens

It’s going to be a slow battle, but after the small town of Bundanoon in NSW Australia banned bottled water a while back and put themselves on the world map, Manitoba in Canada has done the same thing, following in the footsteps of Nova Scotia.

Australia has one town, Canada, two provinces. The Canadians seem to be leading the world in banning things that are bad for your health / the environment after their ban on BPA in baby bottles, yet Australia can’t manage to do the same. Read more about this and the story 60 Minutes ran on the dangers of bpa.

321 water bottles

Water bottles with in-built filters have been around for a while, in the form of some pretty low end products like the Brita sports bottle and the more recent Water Bobble, but we’re happy to see some more high end products on the market.

321 Water is a BPA free bottle made in Australia with a plunger action. Think coffee plunger, you put your drink in, plunge down and you’re ready to go. At the time of this post, the bottles retailed for $39 including GST, a 3 pack of replacement filters for $18 and we’re impressed that each part of the bottle can be replaced if you damage it – the plunger, the outer container, the top and the small caps.

What is a thermos?

Thermos is one of those brand names that has made such an impact on society that they’re also a used as a generic term in the English language, and sometimes this can be confusing.  When people reach for a thermos, they usually mean an insulated flask for coffee or tea, where in fact, Thermos make a wide variety of products that are NOT insulated. These include food jars, tritan plastic water bottle & metal beverage bottles, travel mugs, coolerscarafes & pump pots plus loads more products for outdoor use. View the listing on Vacuum Flask on Wikipedia for a more detailed description.

When searching for a Thermos brand water bottle in a shop or online, don’t automatically assume you can put coffee in it. Thermos water bottles / flasks come in the following varieties and we have indicated whether they’re suitable for storing hot liquid.

  • Tritan plastic water bottles (COLD DRINK ONLY – no insulation)
  • Single wall stainless steel water bottles (COLD DRINK ONLY – no insulation)
  • Vacuum insulated water bottles (COLD DRINK ONLY – with insulation)
  • Vacuum insulated flasks (COLD OR HOT DRINK – with insulation)

Here’s some examples of other brands that have gone ‘generic’.

  • Band-Aid – owned by Johnson & Johnson, it’s the generic term used for an adhesive bandage
  • Frisbee – is the generic term used for a plastic flying disc, so much so that the sport ‘Ultimate Frisbee’ does NOT use the Frisbee brnad for their official equipment yet this is accepted.
  • Aspirin – is actually a brand name belonging to Bayer Health Care
  • Esky – is the generic term used for a portable cooler in Australia, owned by the Nylex company
  • Walkman – was the generic term for a portable tape player in the 80′s, a brand name owned by Sony, still used today to brand MP3 players and phones.
  • Rollerblade – is the generic term for inline stakes
  • Google – to google something is now the generic phrase for using a search engine.
  • iPod – has fast become the generic term used for a portable MP3 player and is owned by Apple

ECOtanka Polar Ice insulated water bottle review

Early 2011, ECOtanka released their first insulated water bottle in to the Australian market. This bottle has more than one unique feature when compared to similar bottles in other brands.

1) Unlike the Thermos  brand water bottles, the ECOtanka Polar Ice is suitable for hot & cold liquids.

2) The ECOtanka Polar Ice will also take the standard sports lid from the ECOtanka range, making it one of only two insulated water bottles on the market (that we’ve come across in Australia) to take a sports lid. The other is the Cheeki Insulated Water Bottle range.

3) It comes standard with a stainless steel cap, which means there’s no plastic touching your water.

INSULATION CAPACITY

  • ICE COLD WATER – starting 5°C – 5 hours later 7°C.
    Result – only 2°C in 5 hours.
  • HOT WATER – starting 96°C – 11 hours later 60°C.
    Result – only 36°C in 11 hours.

The ECOtanka Polar Ice is 800ml in size and is the same physical size as the 1 litre Trekka single wall drink bottle from ECOtanka, which means the Trekka Kooler cover (neoprene insulated pouch) can be used to protect and transport this bottle.

WHERE TO BUY

  •  Shop Naturally $34.95 – sports lids additional purchase
  •  Biome $42.95 (yeah, we know, they’re $8 over the RRP, which is close to 25% over-inflation) – sports lids not available
  • Contact the distributor, Naturally Sustainable for a list of bricks & mortar stores in your area or buy directly from Naturally Sustainable through their online shop.

Water drinking tips

Regardless of what you’re drinking your water out of, here’s some handy tips to get the best health results from drinking water:-

  1. Often when you’re hungry, it’s your body telling you you’re thirsty. If you don’t drink a lot of water, you could just be dehydrated.
  2. You’re best to drink water at room temperature, especially while eating. Icy cold water plays havoc with your digestive system.
  3. Don’t gulp large amounts of water while eating. Just take small sips. Again, this can disrupt the digestive system

Happy drinking!

Canberra Uni bans bottled water

In a move that follows the down of Bundanoon on the NSW South Coast, Canberra University has banned the sale of bottled water from it’s campus, believing it will stop the production and sale of 140,000 disposable water bottles per year. Instead, filtered bubblers just like those installed in Bundanoon are available and students are able to fill up their own reusable water bottle on site.

Insulated squeezable sports drink bottles

We have compared & road tested two bottles today, the Polar bottle and the Camelbak Podium Chill

SIZE – The Polar is the smaller of the two in volume, holding 20oz, where the Camelbak holds 21oz. The Polar is skinner & taller. Both fit neatly in to most bike water bottle holders.

INSULATION – The Camelbak bottle is advertised to keep drinks cold for twice as long. We found the Polar insulated for a little bit longer, but nothing to brag about. For those who want longer insulation in a plastic squeezable, watch this space, someone’s coming out with a better insulated bottle.

SQUEEZABILITY – Is that even a word??? Last years model of the Polar bottle was quite difficult to squeeze with one hand, this years model is easier, but the Camelbak feels better in the hand. It’s insulation is thinner and a little more high tech.

PRICE – The Camelbak Podium Chill is listed at Shop Naturally for $28.95, The Bicycle Store for $29.95,  and is also available in Rebel Sports, most bike stores and high end sporting goods stores nationally. The Polar is a little harder to find. For $23.50, the Polar bottles can be purchased online directly from the Australian Distributor or visit their website for a list of Polar stockists.

SPORTS CAP - The Polar has the same type of sports lid that’s found on any drink bottle. Pop up, push down. It’s very sturdy and good quality. Camelbak however have their magical non-spill valve which means you don’t have to open or close it to stop it leaking while you’re riding. A real bonus for the Camelbak bottle.

Our Verdict?

The Camelbak is sleaker, a little easier to use and the drink valve is working spending the extra few bucks if you’re a cyclist, otherwise, the Polar is perfectly fine.

Vapur, the anti-bottle

Vapur, the anti-bottleWhat’s an anti-bottle you ask? These cool bottles are like those things you buy cheap wine in that stand up straight when they’re full of water and fold flat when they’re empty.

They have a sports cap like you’d find on a Pump bottle from the supermarket, and hold 500ml of water in a bpa free thin plastic bladder that flattens down and rolls up when it’s empty.

The handy carabiner means you can attach it to your bag, your jeans, backpack or whatever you like.

And best of all, when it’s empty, roll it up and put it in your pocket!

Sadly, they’re not available in Australia. Yet. Fingers crossed that someone will bring them in 2011. In the meantime, you can order a Vapur Anti-Bottle directly from the USA. CLICK HERE to visit their online store.

What did we love about the vapur? You can give it a giant squeeze and get the ultimate rush of water in a hurry. The downside? They only come in pretty small sizes at the moment, so they’re not good for transporting a whole day’s water supply. You can also check them out on Facebook.

For those who need something larger, Nalgene make some wide mouth flat water bottles like these in a 1 litre, 1.5 litre and 3 litre capacity. Priced from $18.95 and Nalgene water bottles available online from Shop Naturally and outdoor stores like Paddy Pallin. Click here to find your nearest Paddy Pallin store.

Please be aware that someone has been importing fakes in to the country, as boldly as through the Reed Gift Fair. Anyone selling Vapur bottles very much below their RRP of $18.95 should be given a wide berth and questioned.

Up until several months ago, all Australian retailers were importing the bottles directly from the USA, and the cost of these bottles was fairly high in comparison to other similar bottles such as ECOtanka, a New Zealand based company with Australian distribution through Naturally Sustainable.

The second half of 2010 has seen Zen Imports bring the bottles directly in to Australia, and the price has dropped on these bottles. Despite this, there’s still significant difference in pricing between Australian retailers. Here’s a short summary of the differences to help you find the best deal. All prices are taken from 3rd December 2010 and do not include any discounts. These are the advertised RRP’s at the time the article was written.

We are comparing prices between the retailer listed on the Klean Kanteen website, Chalet, against reputable online retailers Shop Naturally & Biome, both who appear to have an excellent selection of the range and excellent customer service reputations online. Beware online retailers with dodgy looking websites or buying on eBay. When buying online, choose someone reputable.

12oz Klean Kanteen classic coloured bottles

  • Shop Naturally $23.95
  • Biome $24.50
  • Chalet $24.95

18oz Klean Kanteen classic coloured bottles

  • Shop Naturally $25.95
  • Biome $26.50
  • Chalet $26.95

27oz Klean Kanteen classic coloured bottles

  • Shop Naturally $28.95
  • Biome $29.95

40oz Klean Kanteen classic coloured bottles

  • Shop Naturally $39.95
  • Biome $39.95
  • Chalet $42.95

Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth Insulated bottles 12oz

  • Biome $37.50
  • Shop Naturally $37.95
  • Chalet $42.95

Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth Insulated bottles 16oz

  • Shop Naturally $39.95
  • Biome $39.95
  • Chalet $45.95

Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth Insulated bottles 20oz

  • Shop Naturally $41.95
  • Biome $42.95
  • Chalet $49.95

Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth Insulated Cafe Cap

  • Shop Naturally $8.95
  • Biome $10.50
  • Chalet $12.95

As you can clearly see above, Shop Naturally have the best prices on all the Klean Kanteen bottles except one. When the Cafe Cap is taken in to consideration, they win on all pricing. The price difference between Chalet and the other two online retailers for the Insulated Bottles is staggering. Shop Naturally & Biome offer different caps on their bottles, Chalet do not. Shop Naturally appear to have the largest range of colours & sizes available.

The three e-tailers we checked can be found at www.shopnaturally.com.au, www.biome.com.au, www.chalet.net.au

Water Bobble review

Today I picked up a Water Bobble at Robin’s Kitchen. I have walked past them so many times now and today was the day to take one home with me.

What is a Water Bobble? It’s a BPA free water bottle with a water filter built in. 550ml in size, made from recycled PET bottles and made in the USA. They’re also recyclable when you’re done with them.

Let me say this, just fantastic for the environment. Not only do they re-use old soft drink and water bottles to make then, but these little things will save you hundreds of dollars buying bottled water.

The water filter is carbon based and removes organic contaminants from regular municipal tap water. Filters should be replaced after 2 months or  270 bottles worth. That’s a lot of water!!

There’s a pretty big con though, lack of water flow. If you just suck on the bottle (without squeezing), water flow is worse than the average stainless steel water bottle on the market. If you squeeze the bottle, flow is somewhat improved, but once the bottle is less than half full, that becomes difficult too.

They’re a great concept, but I’m not sure they have it quite right. RRP $14.95 in Australia and available to purchase from Robin’s Kitchen, House and other stockists Australia wide. Replacement filter/mouthpieces are $9.95
